Researchers develop a new technique to identify faces from reflections

Scientists have developed a new forensics technique in which they were able to extract images from the corneal reflections of an individual of people standing nearby. The technique can be useful while conducting criminal investigations.

Researchers Rob Jenkins from the University of York in Britain, and collaborator Christie Kerr, from the University of Glasgow, conducted the experiment in which they found that faces can be reconstructed from images taken of an individual with commercial digital cameras and enhanced with off-the-shelf image-processing software.

For the experiment, the scientists used a high-end digital camera and sat five volunteers for a passport-photo-like shot, using studio lighting. All the five people where in the room even when not being clicked and stood close to the photographer to be included in the reflection off the subject's corneas.

Then they asked the subjects to identify images from the reflections as well as the original digital images. Nine out of 10 volunteers were able to correctly identify from the corneal images. The group which was familiar with the five subjects were able to identify the persons with 84 percent success rate and those unfamiliar with the subjects in the photographs were able to identify with 71 percent success rate.

The researchers added that this forensics technology can be used in crimes where the victims are photographed, like abductions or child sex abuse. The reflections in the eyes of the photographic subject could help in identifying perpetrators. They added that the images of people retrieved from cameras seized as evidence during criminal investigations may be used to piece together networks of associates or to link individuals to particular locations.

"The pupil of the eye is like a black mirror. To enhance the image, you have to zoom in and adjust the contrast. A face image that is recovered from a reflection in the subject's eye is about 30,000 times smaller than the subject's face. Our findings thus highlight the remarkable robustness of human face recognition, as well as the untapped potential of high-resolution photography," Jenkins said.

"You could think of it as a foray into extreme facial recognition. Yes, the camera can resolve the face, and yes, the brain can identify it," he writes, "but both systems are pushed to their limits, and neither could perform the feat alone."

Unwanted photo tags are one of the most common form of cyber abuse employed by online bullies. Don't be vulnerable to cyber bullies. Here's how you can nip it in the bud:

Timeline Review controls whether you have to manually approve posts you’re tagged in before they go on your timeline. When you have a post to review, the Needs Review tab will appear on your timeline. This feature is Disabled by default and you have to Enable it. By Enabling this feature you will get an option to approve/disapprove posts you’re tagged in before they go on your timeline.

You can Enable This Option by few simple steps:

Step 1: Go to your Facebook Privacy Settings

Step 2: Simple go to “Privacy Settings > Timeline and Tagging > Review posts friends tag you in before they appear on your Timeline” and Set “On” This option.

Step 3: Click on Edit settings of Timeline and Tagging Option.

Step 4: You will see an option “Review posts friends tag you in before they appear on your Timeline”, Now click on “Off” and set it to “On” to enable this feature for you.

Step 5: And Now Finally Enable this Feature.

After saving the changes if someone tag you on Facebook then you will get Options to either Approve or Disapprove the posts. These posts will not visible on your Timeline until you manually approve them.

So with that in mind, here are some basic tips to consider. Follow these to turn your site into the kind of online space that can keep up with the best of them!

1. Make Choices Based on Goals

The best design choices you can make are the ones backed by goals. So before you do anything with your site, design-wise, stop and evaluate what you want from your blog. Who do you want to be? What is the main message of your brand, and how can you communicate that with your design? If you back everything you do with overarching goals, you set yourself up to have a site that works.

2. Only Use 2 to 3 Fonts and 2 to 3 Colors

Too many fonts and too many colors make a website feel like it’s got too much going on. When in doubt about design choices, simplify. As a best practice for blog design, use only a couple different fonts and a couple different colors repeatedly throughout your layout.

3. Embrace White Space

The best websites make the most of white space in order to create a sense of harmony and balance throughout the design. When used appropriately, white space sets apart different components of your website and helps frame your content.
